VS 2008 Trying to read a text fule but have a problem

I was trying to read a txt file in VB.NET but it would only read the first few characters no matter how I did it. I opened the txt file in Word and saw it stopped reading when I got to a square symbol which I do not know what it is. I need to read the entire file in and it stops at the square. Does anyone know what this is or how to get around it?
