Remote conection monitor

Hi All,

I need to code a program to monitor local and remote connections to a computer. My goal is to capture any unauthorized connections to a given computer and/or what files are being accessed. I have been searching for a starting point and I seem to be looking for the wrong buzz words. If someone could, would you point me in the right direction so I can research the solution myself?
